Chapter Twelve

Skyler leaned her head back into the water. Her wet hair fell down her back, and her face tingled from the sun hitting her salty skin. She was lucky she’d been in tropical countries for the last several months—she had a decent base tan and didn’t seem to be burning. Rob was naturally tanned—thanks to his Latino roots—and didn’t appear to be getting scorched either. She’d have to have a bath in aloe vera when she got back to Gili Air, though. She already felt her skin getting tight from the salt water. What she would do for a palm full of moisturizer.

It was day two of being “shiplessly shipwrecked” as they called it, and she’d woken up sticky and sweaty. Rob had moved over to her bed the next night and took full advantage of their new proximity. He’d taken her hard before they fell asleep, and then again when they woke up. She wasn’t about to say no, because what was she, stupid? The man was a fucking god. But his big body, which seemed to retain heat like a copper pot, pressed up against hers, combined with the thrusting and gyrating was just too much. She broke out into a sweat, and when he rolled off her, she beelined it for the ocean.

While she was diving around like a selkie, Rob had pried his sexy ass off the bed and wandered back out to the rocky point to fish. They were eating their food sparingly, but eventually the coconuts would run out, and there didn’t seem to be any edible seaweed around.

She scanned the horizon. There weren’t any big, dark, gray rain clouds anywhere. Just wispy white ones that looked like the tail of a mare swishing across the bright blue sky.

They needed to find help soon. Really soon. With no rain and their coconut supply not well stocked, they’d be out of fresh water in a matter of days.

This was not going to be like The Blue Lagoon, where they made a life and raised a family here. No. The island wasn’t big enough for that. And Skyler didn’t have enough sanity for that.

Skyler swam around the water a bit longer. She’d brought her mask and snorkel with her and put them on, hoping to perhaps find something that they might be able to eat. She hated the idea of having to eat a living creature, but she hadn’t been running this long, changing her name and appearance, to let being stranded on a deserted island bring her down. She’d eat a whale shark if she had to.

Okay, maybe not a whale shark. Not her unicorn. But a titan triggerfish for sure. Those things were assholes anyway.

After a long, luxurious swim, she made her way back up to the beach. Rob was there, with what looked like six fish, the same species as before, gutted and skewered.

“You’re amazing!” She beamed, taking in his glistening torso as he propped the fish over the fire they’d kept going since that first day.
